IMD Smart City Index 2023

This year's IMD Smart City Index provides a unique perspective on the quality of life in cities, drawing on meticulously sourced data from the Global Data Lab's Human Development Index (HDI) at the city level, rather than relying on country-level statistics. The index evaluates key metrics such as life expectancy, expected years of schooling, mean years of education completed, and per capita income to gauge the well-being of city residents.

Zurich has emerged as the frontrunner in this year's rankings of smart cities, securing the top spot, followed by Oslo in second place and Canberra in third. On the other hand, Athens has experienced a significant drop in its ranking, now standing at 113th place out of 141 cities.

The IMD Smart City Index serves as a valuable yardstick for assessing progress in areas such as openness, innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability. As we witness the emergence of a new world order, it becomes evident that changes at the city level offer valuable insights into the shape of things to come. Openness and collaboration among cities are poised to become pivotal elements in the forthcoming wave of globalization.
